Immersion in Silence: Acoustic Window Booth Unveiled in Hong Kong

Project: Design and Development of an Immersive Multi-sensory Acoustic Window Booth

Client: EPD

Location: Hong Kong

Year: 2020-2021

Project Overview: Traditionally, open windows provide fresh air but also allow disruptive sounds to enter, leading to sleep disturbances, increased stress levels, and decreased concentration. The acoustic window, a marvel of design, addresses this issue by balancing the need for ventilation with effective noise reduction, making it an essential feature for modern urban living.

The technology, previously unfamiliar to many, has been successfully implemented in Hong Kong’s Shek Mun Estate, showcasing its potential to improve urban living environments. To facilitate stakeholder engagement and broader educational outreach, ANewR was commissioned to design and build the Acoustic Window Booth. This booth provides a detailed explanation of the acoustic window’s benefits and functionality.

The booth’s interactive features include hand gestures that trigger animations, sound narrations, wind simulations, and automatic window demonstrations. This immersive experience not only educates visitors about acoustics but also makes the learning process engaging and enjoyable.

The Acoustic Window Booth was open for tours at CIC–Zero Carbon Park in Hong Kong
