Modelling (Infographics)

By regulation, the external environment can be dealt with by launching an environmental assessment; an indoor environment is another important quality affecting people. We are obliged to assess construction and development. For the interior environment, noise, heating and lighting are three crucial elements for the users’ comfort. The overall sensation is also about where the facility sits. Therefore, we engage a list of modelling to analyse the environmental situation.

The new Acoustic Calibration Centre (ACC), now accredited by HOKLAS for calibration services

The new Acoustic Calibration Centre (ACC) has been recently accredited in Hong Kong in 2021.

HOKLAS Accreditation

ACC is now accredited by Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) under the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS), which has been mutually recognised by 53 laboratory accreditation bodies (58 accreditation schemes) in 45 economies.

Track Records

Since 2000, ACC has completed more than three hundred calibrations. The most remarkable track record is that ACC has been appointed to design the sound-level meter calibration laboratory for the Environmental Protection Department of HKSAR in consecutive years.

The State-of-art Calibration System

ACC equips with the state-of-art calibration system – Norsonic NOR1504A – from one of the world’s leading specialist acoustic instrumentation manufacturers. The system assures all the relevant standards to comply with during the testing. The accuracy of our testing and measuring equipment (Norsonic NOR1504A) is regularly tested by the Standard and Calibration Laboratory of HKSAR. The measurement unit of Norsonic NOR1504A is traceable to the International System of Units (SI), stringent and accepted universally. Our acoustic professionals run the test with the standards-complied calibration system to identify any instrument deficiency.

Uniqueness

ACC is the only centre accredited by HOKLAS in Hong Kong eligible to conduct the real-time one-third octave band analyser test. The verification goes after the parameters attenuation in the pass-band 0.1 dB and Attenuation outside the pass-band 1.8 dB specified in IEC 61260:1995, which the test for IEC 61260:1995 is difficult and time-consuming if executed manually. The calibration offer of the real-time one-third octave band analyser makes ACC unique.

Service scopes

As the standards change, ACC has evolved with the refurbished calibration laboratory requirements – superseded IEC651 and IEC 804 by IEC 61672 and IEC61260. We calibrate both sound level meters and calibrators of Classes I and II variations, following a wide range of international standards, including IEC 61672-3 Ed 2.0 (2013), In-house test procedure ESG-Noise-001 against the IEC 61260:1995 requirements, In-house test procedure ESG-Noise-003 concerning IEC 60942 2003 standard. Specific tests or properties measured will be launched according to the HOKLAS’s scope of accreditation. We calibrate sound calibrators, sound measuring instruments such as sound level meters, and sound/octave band analysers of all brands. Our cost-effective calibration services strive to minimise downtime for our customers. The standard turnaround time is seven working days. Prices start from HKD2000 only. A premium five-working-day turnaround service is also available on request (subject to a surcharge).

How IoT adds value to manufactured products and after services

Photos below: Noisy spot on the car door

Entering the modernized Industry 4.0 era, we are now talking about the Internet of Things (IoT), interconnected sensors and instruments connected to the Internet. For manufacturers, IoT serves best when quality control and maintenance departments determine to settle the users’ feedback and enhance product quality. ANewR’s track record has proven the usefulness of IoT in manufacturing.

Smart factories make use of IoT to improve the operational process. ANewR has been appointed by one of the leading motor vehicle providers, to identify the noise source from the car door and the engine using the acoustic camera, a perfect example exhibiting the high standards and an excellent brand picture.

Noise is omnidirectional and reverberant. Noise source identification is too difficult without using an acoustic measurement instrument. Utilising an Acoustic Camera has been displayed as a practical solution with its specific beam-forming technique to undertake the noise source identification. In this case, ANewR has found out for our client by using the acoustic camera that the noise characteristic frequency ranges from 800Hz to 2000Hz at the car door; at the engine, the most critical frequency is 4000 Hz. We have conducted several experiments to testify and verify the noisy spots. Occasionally, results varied as noise would be blocked by specific car configuration and transferred to the acoustic camera’s microphone through the nearest path from the original point to another.

Successfully catching the particular noisy spots from a complex machinery structure enables engineers to focus on the problematic areas instead of nowhere. Sensing devices eliminate manual examination, which may incite physical harm if the inspection object is a razor-sharp item, such as a chain saw or is an equipment operating in extreme conditions. IoT supports the inspection staff in a swifter and safer investigation into the core subjects. ANewR’ has committed to our client with our extensive experience in sensing systems and applications to the real case in a valuable and cost-effective way.

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, once said, “The plow — like many technologies, both ancient and modern — is about creating more of something and doing it more efficiently, so that more people can benefit.” Applying IoT in manufacturing is the right way at the right moment from now to add value to manufactured products and after services.

The authentic practice

Photos above: 4D virtual reality of noise performance of acoustic window and acoustic balcony for the staff training of Environmental Protection Department of HKSAR

The contemporary corporate organisation facilitates information exchange with communicable, interactive platforms. Remarkably, the digital trend is on the way to provide user-friendly and digitised services and training. How do we utilize this digitalisation in environmental training?

The visualised, virtual reality (VR) illustration is incredibly practical for a metropolitan situation. One of the city’s striking models is 4D VR environmental training – Our prime example of implementing digitalisation into environmental discipline to turn the historical training practice perfect for the environmental staff.

The idea of digital visualisation is not to discard the tradition; this enhances the generation’s practice to deliver coherent, more favorable results to all. The  4-dimensional generation is strengthening 3-D visual capability with sound effects to create an authentic learning journey. Partaking in the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR training project, we have applied the fundamental knowledge of noise and acoustic window and balcony products in the virtual environment into digital tools to create the VR experience with sound effects. Visually being in the environment with the acoustic products installed, the user is standing at one point wearing the VR headset and holding the controller to handle the acoustic products’ open or closure. The user audibly recognises the noise level differences in various scenarios; their acoustic expertise is now turning from imagining the data to a useful background experience.

We apprehend visual digitalisation in environmental impact training with interactive animation. Next is how to apply an immersive, automatic virtual environment to engage stakeholders to a greater extent.
