Another critical issue that experts have been telling us is that our corals are dying. Though corals are adapted to heat stress, there is still a limit. A few species of corals have been driven to extinction in evolutionary history due to excessive heat and ocean acidification. The rapid change of climate poses a real risk to corals. Mr. William Restauro Villaver, a marine biologist from the Philippines, will explore the topic of corals with us in the session. He will talk about coral, why he started coral planting, corals observation at night, and more fun facts about coral. His group activity of putting the statue on the coast of Bohol in the Philippines in the hope of saving the coral reef was featured by the BBC.

How to monitor vulnerable venue to disruptive events

Hospital is a compassionate venue. The operating rooms, procedure rooms, equipment are valuable and, at the same time, vulnerable to disruptive events. The vibration-sensitive machinery has a restricted floor vibration limit to maintain the proper equipment operation. In broad scope, ISO 4866: 2010 ‘Mechanical vibration and shock — Vibration of fixed structures — Guidelines for the measurement of vibrations and evaluation of their effects on structures’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has provided a classification of buildings according to their probable reaction to mechanical vibration transmitted by the ground. There are acceptable rms acceleration and velocity specified for each project’s flooring system’s practical uses to be more specific.

A Hospital in Hong Kong has realised the potential consequences. The Hospital has made a move to a decisive, proactive approach to preventing bad things from happening. ANewR has engaged in partaking in the job.

Estimated to serve 1,455,100 population in the concerned communities in 2026, Hospital has the complete redevelopment plan of managing the nearby areas for expansion with the extra community health centre and ambulatory centre. The subsequent decant arrangement indicates the Hospital will launch construction and demolition operations; meanwhile, the Hospital is in service to the general public. Unavoidably, the construction and demolition work will trigger all sorts of environmental impacts, including vibration. A high-precision and high-sensitive vibration monitoring device and wireless system with a one-second real-time monitoring platform are needed to assist the hospital staff in warranting the machines’ vibration effect.

To commence the project, ANewR has placed twenty sets of vibration monitoring systems in the Hospital. Each with a high-precision device detecting one micrometer per second. The device is highly reliable without losing data in operation. The placement points are based on a notable criterion – near a susceptible medical device in the critical medical room. On the other hand, the hospital staff and work-related staff are authorized to receive the notification through SMS and email when the vibration level has reached the pre-set warning limits. The verification warning procedure pre-sets 3A levels – Alert, Alarm, and Action, which will be triggered in real-time. Considering the vibration impact triggered at different locations, ANewR has created an adaptive d-noise monitoring platform to let the admin user group several placement points into one location group. The system is intelligent in facilitating different warning combinations in a location group. The admin user has been granted the flexibility in grouping the device placement point with the placement points at other locations relatively far away from the site to cross-check the vibration level. When all placement points in one location group all detect exceeding the pre-set limit, it will set off the notification warning. The locational map of each device placement points attached on the same page of real-time vibration location empowers the staff to identify the placement points without question.

ANewR’s d-noise platform supports the designated staff to fully access the system as a login user to view the monitored status and figures. The login user has been given the right to generate reports with classified information – vibration data, vibration exceedance data, hourly news, and weekly report. Continuous monitoring of the performance can never be more straightforward.

How can we manage sick tree better?

Metropolitan, like Hong Kong, has incorporated environmental city design, proposing life in harmony with nature. While celebrating such a green city movement, ANewR’s client – one of the mass transport providers, has made a great move to manage the interplay with nature.

There are over a million trees in Hong Kong. In 2008, a one-hundred-year-old valuable tree failed and killed a teen. In 2014, a fallen tree hit a pregnant woman. In 2018, a domestic helper was killed by a decaying four-metre-long branch that weighed 30kg. When trees get sick, the signs of their unhealthiness pose threats to city dwellers. The potential risk is why we need tree management. Alerted by real-world tragedies, ANewR has worked with Client to develop a Dante tree system to avoid the catastrophe. 

ANewR’s Dante tree management system allows arborist and project staff to maintain the record of trees attentive care adjacent to the new transportation development crossing seven districts of the total distance seventeen kilometers. It is highly strategic for corporations to manage the knowledge of arboriculture. Regularly reading the tree health condition notices the arborists the tree survival rate and opens up the risk tree identification. It is particularly useful when the tree has to be relocated for preservation reasons. The arborist will have to keep track of the tree condition, whether the tree grows well or not in the relocated environment. If the tree is unable to adapt to the new living environment, the tree may defect. The arborist should follow up with a Tree risk assessment. 

Upkeeping the high survival rate minimises jeopardies and associated misfortunes. Speeding up diagnosis reduces costs and time. Client’s tree management performance is outstanding – 90% of tree survival rate, 0% fatal accident, 100% response rate to the public inquiries within twenty-four hours. The Dante tree management system’s adoption is not merely a modernised management system but also a way to conserve our trees and save human lives.

It is meriting maintaining trees in healthy conditions. Trees supply oxygen, which allows us to breathe to survive; trees grab to avoid landslides. Communications mandatory for ESG performance disclosure

We gradually see more countries imposing disclosure terms on a company’s environmental and sustainability performance. Authentic performance is of great importance to be the leader in your working industry. People who want to be the first in the world could lead by an invention, innovation, and creativity developed for products or services. It also could be the first move to enhance environmental practice through legislation. New Zealand makes climate reporting compulsory. In Hong Kong, a revised ESG Reporting Guide (“Guide”) has been launched by the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, effective from 1 July 2020. Companies will need to extend their techniques to respond to the latest reporting challenges, such as how, when, and what they need to report. It is a move addressing the growing concern of climate change issues. An outstanding leader can act as a driving force to encourage good things to happen. ESG disclosure becomes a key factor for forward-looking companies and investor decisions.

The government policies issued worldwide have demonstrated the growing demand in disclosing decision-useful data. For industries, the environmental data has a significant advantage for national climate programs and economic instruments such as carbon taxes and emissions trading. Energy supplies and engird intensive companies are regularly criticised for their emission performance. Quantitative data is of great value in both sustainability factors and economic administration. Here below are few examples of climate-related data disclosures that increasingly common in reporting provisions since the 2000s (Carrots & Sticks Report, 2020):

Entering the modernized Industry 4.0 era, we are now talking about the Internet of Things (IoT), interconnected sensors and instruments connected to the Internet. For manufacturers, IoT serves best when quality control and maintenance departments determine to settle the users’ feedback and enhance product quality. Smart factories make use of IoT to improve the operational process. ANewR has been appointed by one of the leading motor vehicle providers, to identify the noise source from the car door and the engine using the acoustic camera, a perfect example exhibiting the high standards and an excellent brand picture. 

Noise is omnidirectional and reverberant. Noise source identification is too difficult without using an acoustic measurement instrument. Utilising an Acoustic Camera has been displayed as a practical solution with its specific beam-forming technique to undertake the noise source identification. In this case, ANewR has found out for our client by using the acoustic camera that the noise characteristic frequency ranges from 800Hz to 2000Hz at the car door; at the engine, the most critical frequency is 4000 Hz. We have conducted several experiments to testify and verify the noisy spots. Occasionally, results varied as noise would be blocked by specific car configuration and transferred to the acoustic camera’s microphone through the nearest path from the original point to another. 

Successfully catching the particular noisy spots from a complex machinery structure enables engineers to focus on the problematic areas instead of nowhere. Sensing devices eliminate manual examination, which may incite physical harm if the inspection object is a razor-sharp item, such as a chain saw or is an equipment operating in extreme conditions. IoT supports the inspection staff in a swifter and safer investigation into the core subjects. Do you see the difference between you and the engineers?

The engineers build and resolve the problem through the source, whereas the first thing we see as non-engineers receive the outcome and then look at the source. Our sensation tends to be influenced by a psychological factor.

Here below is an example of differences.

When you walk down to the street where a construction site stands, the construction workers usually install a soundproof canvas. The one-kilogram-per-square-meter vinyl insulates less than ten dB sound level. The quietness function has been used to minimise the source noise impact. And, what would engineers do about the problem? The engineers would develop a solution to tackle the issues, such as finding the appropriate materials to accomplish the tasks.

The aesthetic design is now buddying up with sustainable material – this is what the engineers are doing for their jobs. The Amorim expanded cork is an aesthetically pleasing and negative carbon balance product. The panels can absorb more than ninety percent of random incident sound from 125 to 135 Hz. The versatility is the various combinations of sound absorption materials behind the corkboard, such as water repellent rock wool and fire resistance acoustic fabric to tune the cork panel’s sound absorption properties. It is worth noting that cork is a sustainable material – entirely natural, light, permeable to liquids and gases, elastic and compressible, thermal and acoustic insulation, completely biodegradable, renewable, and recyclable.

Derail a train is a disastrous event. There was a derailed oil tanker in Wales on 26 August 2020, causing flames and fuel spillage of around 330,000 litres. Ten of the wagons came off the tracks. The use of electrical train service assures us to have an efficient way to commute around the city, even across countries. When we treat the train as if our bodies, wheels are just like our limbs and joints. They deteriorate over time with the frequent motion. Wheel defects, or wheel flats, on railway wheels would generate abnormal rolling noise causing potential noise nuisance in such a densely developed metropolitan city. In this case, ANewR has acted to help our client’s painstaking task. 

One of the world’s leading railway operators (The Operator) has about 5.6 million passengers traveling each day. Safety, reliability, customer service, and cost-efficiency are their objectives to maintain the industry reputation. Apart from the noise issue, one of their concerns is the derailed trains induced by the wheels’ imperfection in rolling stock. Derailed trains would lead to a painful death and multiple collateral damages. To prevent the derailment incident from happening, The Operator had spent over three million Hong Kong Dollars (over three hundred thousand British Pounds) for five-year manual inspection work, before applying ANewR’s acoustic system and Kvikoo advanced monitoring platform.

The past measurement method takes not only money but also human resources and time. The Operator conducted manual noise measurement at a specified location four times a year to inspect whether any abnormal noise occurred. The officer had to deploy to the site to measure the noise level during the standard operating time and analyse the noise measurement result with the video clips to identify any suspected defected wheel. The whole manual process is labour-intensive.

Kvikoo’s most significant advantage is to solve the manual scheduled inspection and maintenance problems by identifying potential flaw wheels without interrupting regular operation. It is a combination of acoustics and vision analytics technologies. The working concept is simple and straightforward: recording the noise with the acoustic camera and a CCTV at a specific spot, detecting abnormal stock wheels and tracks by identifying the high-frequency noise whenever the train passes the sensing system.

The sensing system comprises various hardware and software, including an acoustic camera, a high-speed camera, and an automated analytical intelligence system. The acoustic camera with one hundred and twenty-eight microphones and one camera will make an acoustic photo record indicating the noise source. The high-speed camera is to photoshoot the compartment number. When the acoustic camera identifies the noise source in the first step, the task of looking for the trouble compartment becomes effortless to follow. The cameras function well to capture the photos when the train speed at a 65 – 85 km/hr—the whole system works to start with the motion-detection camera to trigger an acoustic camera and high-speed camera. At the cameras’ back-end, we have installed a trackside server for storage and a data center for data analysis of compartment number and noise level. The transmission is secured through the 4G network.

At the other end, ANewR has set up the Kvikoo’s customised web-based monitoring platform for The Operator to perform various functions, such as managing devices and users, schedule measurement, customize train tables, and set email notification and trigger levels. The user-mode allows users to view measurement results and online video streaming. The monitoring platform will highlight noisy train data in red for easy tracking. Once the system discovers any abnormalities, the department in charge will receive an alert. The safety and environmental departments of The Operator is empowered to act quickly with follow-up action and repair to minimize accidents. Such preventive measures conform to safety compliances. No interruption will occur to the rails’ regular operation for the machinery is monitored and analysed in real-time. The promise of customer service with safety and no delay guarantees a positive corporate image. The designated user can retrieve data through filtering functions by tailored classifications of line, location, train type, noisy wheel, compartment ID, and measurement period. The records are traceable; the history of documents is saved, and reports are downloadable. The export function is great for the user to generate reports conveniently and look back through continuous monitoring records.

The outcome of adopting Kvikoo preventive maintenance system is remarkable. The automatic system reaches 95% accuracy; it also raises the inspection efficiency by at least 20%. In terms of cost reduction, Kvikoo system has saved a quarter of the original cost. Since the system is the customised automated system that does not require technicians to operate, The Operator has minimised workforce assigned to the scheduled investigation and maintenance works. Kvikoo contributes to a further reduction of inspection costs.

The Operator’s case demonstrates ANewR’s Kvikoo intelligent preventive maintenance system’s merits in guaranteeing the project owner with the passenger safety enhancement, the feasible maintenance schedule of rolling stock, and the maintenance checking accuracy. Ultimately, ANewR aids in detecting the noise source from the wheels and the rolling stock and other parts of the train. The customisable predictive maintenance system is non-intrusive – the measurement and monitoring works do not interfere with the regular train service and operation. It is trouble-free to determine whether the issue to fix originates from the problematic wheels, or compartment’s ventilation, or other mechanical pieces by catching the unusual sound while monitoring it with the acoustic and monitoring application. Last but not least, ANewR’s acoustic system and the Kvikoo monitoring system are a great deal in terms of cost-saving and maintenance.
