What to review for equal opportunity

Are you socially inclusive? United Nations has defined social inclusion as “the process of improving the terms of participation in society, particularly for people who are disadvantaged, through enhancing opportunities, access to resources, voice and respect for rights.”

Who are the disadvantaged groups? Disadvantaged groups are “groups of persons that experience a higher risk of poverty, social exclusion, discrimination, and violence than the general population,” according to the European Institute for Gender Equality.

Considering the Sustainability Development Goals of No Poverty, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work, and Economic Growth, as well as Reduced Inequalities, we can deduce numbers of ways to reach equal opportunity. At the functional level, the International Labour Organisation suggests starting at the workplace.

Whereas by law in Hong Kong, we have Anti-Discrimination Ordinances, including race discrimination, disability discrimination, sex discrimination, and family status discrimination. Equal Opportunities Commission has issued “Equal Opportunities in Employment: Good Management Practices” to guide corporate organisations beyond compliance.

Corporate governance principles have critical leadership in the organisation. Apart from the economic benefits from a diverse workforce, inclusion has a stunning effect on society – more excellent social stability and public support for economic development, named by the International Labour Organisation. Review the practices when working on corporate social responsibility planning to ensure your organisation is working towards the same target, to be an authentic corporate social responsibility practitioner.

So, have no-bias in mind, spread the code of conduct, put the principle in force. By obeying the law and practice beyond compliance, your good corporate governance contributes to social inclusion by non-discrimination.
