How to capitalise on GIS’s capabilities to enhance ecological protection practice, enforcement and stakeholder engagement

All of the above GIS track records are about data sharing. Why do we share? We share for public access, customer access and internal team access. Information accessibility is sometimes required for the project. Organisations that employ data sharing solutions could often gain a competitive advantage through a more reliable operation and maintenance.

In environmental terms, the practical usage of GIS in a project to share the GIS map showing the project location associated with any potential impacts. Project is an umbrella consisting of various subsidiaries for implementation. An environmental assessment would include an ecological study that the project proponent and subcontractors would collect additional data to complete the task. Often, the project is on a long-term basis. In this case, two-way collaboration is necessary, and mutual trust must be built by connecting parties through a single organisation. GIS here would support top-level business connections and outline the collaborative workflow.

The project, especially the infrastructure project, is complex in the organisation involving different parties of diverse backgrounds. A user-friendly platform – no coding or scripting – is essential for communications and collaboration. The simplicity creates a good hub for every project proponent to work on transparency without myth. The simple collaborative platform aids the project proponents in realising the collaboration capabilities. Every project proponent could plan with clear goals identification. The project architecture is therefore designed and drawn out. It becomes easier to test the collaboration and periodically revisit the goals and architecture. And, these are what the GIS platform could offer.

Bear in mind that information loss is another significant matter causing the mismanagement of a project. Project proponents could lose data and information through the whole infrastructure life cycle, from planning, data collection, analysis, design, construct, as-built, to operate.
